FIA Formula E Championship Trophy
The new trophy design represents the next stage for the EV motorsport championship, tying in with Formula E’s vibrant new brand identity, which launched in December. The new trophy celebrates the next phase of Formula E - the debut of the all-new Gen3 - Formula E’s fastest, lightest, most powerful and most efficient race car, which hit the track for pre-season testing in Valencia, Spain in December ahead of the first race of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Mexico City on 14th January.
The Brief
Beta’s design team were challenged to develop an iconic, sculptural form that would stand the test of time, in turn producing a desirable object that drivers would relish to keep after the race weekend. The trophy brief was to create a new icon to suit the new perception of the sport - its fast-paced development and growing popularity - in a modern and minimalist form. It was vital that the overall appearance conveyed a feeling of electrification, speed, and movement, whilst remaining elegant and well-considered.
Design Development
The final trophy design is made up of 44 fins: 22 larger fins representing the 22 drivers, and 22 smaller fins representing the 22 cars on track. Its form takes inspiration from automotive spokes, heat sinks, and cores within a cable, combined with flowing lines seen in timeless jewellery and automotive body panels. Beta chose anodised aluminium as the primary material for its lightweight, rigid qualities, which also enabled an accurate gold and silver colour match. It was vital to both Formula E and Beta that the final creation had a high-end jewellery-like quality, elevating this above everything that had gone before.
Final Design
Having just undergone a redefined brand identity, Formula E tasked Beta with ensuring the trophy’s design fully encompassed Formula E’s new vision. The motorsport championship’s new identity is the latest expression of their ‘Change Accelerated’ brand positioning. Inspired by the instant torque of electric acceleration, the system speaks to the sport’s role as a catalyst for change, which helps manufacturers accelerate electric vehicle technologies. The new identity celebrates the pace at which new fans are coming into the sport and the unprecedented speed with which the sport achieved FIA World Championship status.
Henry Chilcott, Chief Marketing Officer, Formula E
“We tasked Beta with creating a trophy that would be the pinnacle expression of our new brand identity. Inspired by the instant torque of electric acceleration, the trophy speaks to our sport’s role as a powerful catalyst for change, whilst also capturing the excitement and speed of electric racing. We can’t wait to see it lifted in celebration at our first race of Season 9 in Mexico City on Saturday 14 January.”
